Good news — Bairn Croft Residential Services (BCRS) offers a 3-month paid Counsellor Development Program to help you get started!

Applicants who successfully complete the program will be offered ongoing employment with BCRS.

About the Counsellor Development Program

Participants in the Counsellor Development Program will shadow experienced residential and day program staff over a three-month period while gaining knowledge in:

  • Behavioural intervention techniques and strategies
  • Applied Behaviour Analysis and Cognitive-Based approaches
  • Mental health and developmental support practices
  • Agency policies, procedures, and administrative documentation

The program combines hands-on learning, theory, and supervised training to prepare individuals for a rewarding career supporting people with diverse abilities.

BCRS provides a dynamic environment for individuals interested in careers related to social services, psychology, education, counselling, youth justice, law enforcement, and community support. This is an excellent starting point for building valuable skills and experience across multiple fields.

About the Position

Work Setting: Community-based programs supporting individuals of all ages.

Population Served:

BCRS supports individuals of all genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds, including those with developmental, intellectual, learning, physical, sensory (hearing or vision), and mental health disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, person-centred support to individuals
  • Encourage skill development and promote independence
  • Assist with day program and recreational activities
  • Implement individualized behaviour and support plans
  • De-escalate and manage crises in a calm, professional manner
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners
  • Maintain accurate documentation and program statistics
  • Participate in ongoing training and agency development

Note: Duties may vary based on program needs.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong communication (verbal, written, and active listening)
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving, and sound judgment
  • Effective time management and organization
  • Patience, empathy, and professionalism under pressure
  • Team collaboration and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude

Experience: Prior experience in human services is an asset but not required.

Education: Secondary School Diploma (minimum requirement; post-secondary studies in a related field are an asset).

Safety and Security Requirements

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (required)
  • Child Abuse Registry Check (link provided; free of charge)
  • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR Certificate (required)

Transportation

  • Reliable vehicle and valid G-class driver’s licence
  • Proof of insurance and 3-year Driver’s Abstract (required)
    Public transportation is available for some program locations.

Position Details

Location: Orleans and surrounding area

Schedule:

  • Group Facilitator (Day Program): Daytime shifts, Monday–Friday
  • Residential Counsellor: Combination of daytime, evening, and weekend shifts

Employment Type: Full-time, Contract

Wages:

  • $20.60 per hour, which includes Ontario’s current minimum wage of $17.60/hour plus a $3.00/hour Permanent Wage Enhancement (PWE)
  • The PWE is a government-funded initiative and is subject to continuation of the program by the Government of Ontario.
  • Upon successful completion of the Counsellor Development Program, wages increase to align with BCRS’s standard rates for Counsellor or Day Program positions, which exceed the training rate.
